Updated: Apr 30

Please feel free to Comment on this post if you have any additional information as to when the City Council is to vote on the recommendations.

The following was sent to those homeowners who have property listings on VRBO:

Dear Property Owner or Manager, On Tuesday, May 10, the Folly Beach City Council will have a workshop to discuss the mayor’s recommendations regarding regulating vacation rentals. The purpose of the workshop is to get feedback from members of the City Council on the recommendations, and then the town will move forward with the process of creating and passing an ordinance. If you have not already done so, please take a few minutes to read the mayor’s recommendations regarding vacation rentals here. These recommendations could limit your ability to rent your home in Folly Beach. Some of the proposed restrictions include:

  • Establishing a cap on the number of vacation rental licenses below the current number of licensed rentals

  • A $2,000 annual license fee for 6% properties

  • Requiring every vacation rental to have a local agent that must respond within 30 minutes if needed

  • Establishing a system of strikes for violations of the rules and revocation of your vacation rental license with three strikes in a 12-month period

We encourage you to make your voice heard by reaching out to Mayor Goodwin and members of City Council before the workshop on May 10th. The meeting time has not yet been announced, and it is not clear at this time if public comment will be permitted at that meeting. The best way to make your voice heard is to call or email Mayor Goodwin and members of the city council. You can find contact information on the city’s website here. If you have any questions, please email governmentaffairs@vrbo.com. Best, Vrbo Government Affairs
